Peter Easton, surely the son of Peleg and Eunice (Hussey) Easton, b. 13 Sep 1782, Nantucket (IGI). See David Easton below.
David Easton, surely the son of Peleg and Eunice (Hussey) Easton, b. 8 May 1790, Nantucket (IGI). See Peter Easton above. He m. Sally Marshall 4 May 1815, Nantucket (IGI).
David Stowell, probably the son of Daniel and Susannah (Sherrow) Stowell, b. perhaps Stonington, CT. He married Pamelia Jones 14 Oct 1810, New Bedford (IGI). NB Mercury, 9/18/1818, p. 3, mariner, late of New Bedford, insolvent.
Joseph Chace, surely son of Joseph and Martha (Hillman) Chace, b. 29 Apr 1783, Tisbury (IGI).
Joseph Briggs, probably the son of Joseph and Esther (Paull) Briggs of Berkley.
Joseph Rose appears in the 1850 Federal census on Nantucket, age 60, b. Portugal, seaman, can't read or write, living with the family of his daughter Lydia (Mrs. Alexander Bunker, 2nd). In 1860 he was still living with the Bunkers as a farmer and fisherman, age 70, b. Brazil. A William Rose is also enumerated, age 50, b. New York, same occupation. The 1870 census places him similarly, age 82, b. South America, no occupation. He married Mary Jones 5 Sep 1813, Nantucket (vrs), dau. of Benjamin and Amy Jones, Joseph was "of Portugal." He died 18 Jan 1873, Nantucket, age 81y, 6m, general debility, widower, laborer, b. St. Catherines S. A. (MA State Health Dept deaths 257:285) Although there is a Flores in Brazil, it is far inland in the state of Pernambuco. St. Catherine's likely refers to Ilha Santa Caterina, and island in the far southern coast of Brazil. The capital of the state of Santa Caterina is Florianopolis on the island, and this may have led to saying that he was born in Flores on the crewlist. At 17, and finding menial work on a whaler, he undoubtedly did not have enough money travel a great distance to the coast, and thus a ship to take him away, so residence on the island is reasonable.
Milton Andros, son of Rev. Thomas and Abigail (Cutler) Andros, b. 16 Apr 1786, Berkley, MA, d. 2 June 1822. He had a half-brother named for him after his death. He may have been the Milton Andrews living in Freetown, MA, in the 1820 census. In 1817 that name appears on lists of letters at the New York City post office.
Samuel Hazard: nothing about him has been found. There was a wealthy, slave-holding Hazzard family in Beaufort Co., South Carolina, which was on the Atlantic Coast. There are no records found of the name Hazard in Middleborough, MA. The Rotch family owned Sally. William R. Rotch, Jr. and Thomas Rotch witnessed signatures on the shipping papers of 1810. The return notice of the ship in 1810 in The Old Colony Gazette says the owners were "Rotch and Hazard." This was Thomas Hazard, and he was surely one of the co-owners. He was a Friend, as were the Rotches, and involved in the protection of a fugitive slave named John and his family. They had been living with Thomas Rotch for about a year before they got word in New Bedford that the owner was coming to town looking for them. The parents and two children went to the care of Moses Brown in Providence, but about three other children remained in New Bedford in the care of Hazard. Was one of them Samuel? In a letter from Hazard to Brown, he says their names were changed. Did Samuel get his name from Thomas Hazard before being placed in a safe home? He would have been 6 years old when this event occurred. Perhaps there was a willing person in Middleborough, which was far enough from the coast to not be an obvious place to look for fugitives. The 1800 census lists various people in Middleborough who had free blacks in their households. Whether any of them were Friends or in any other way connected to New Bedford isn't yet known.
