Port of New Bedford Decr 27, 1823

I hereby certify that all the men on the above list
of crew, have returned from thier whale voyage in to sd Port
of New Bedford, except Ichabod Bartlett who was discharged at the
[prob. Cape Deverds, meaning Cape de Verde, or Cape Verde] Islands on the outward passage. Martin Bent, deceased during
the sd voyage and John Rock who deserted the sd ship at Wawhoo
Sandwich Islands - Given under my hand - [signed] Eli Haskell Dy [duty] Surveyor


Edward Jenney would seem to have been the son of Jonathan and Anna (Hammond), b. 28 Dec 1789,

Andrew Pickens b. 20 Mar 1795, Rochester, MA (IGI), son of Benjamin & Abiah. 1850 census, Fairhaven, mariner, living with wife Martha in household of Jabez & Betsey Shearman, undoubtedly his wife's parents (Jabez and Elizabeth had a dau. Martha b. 1798).

Isaac Russell prob. son of William, Jr. & Patience (Swain)(IGI), d. 28 June 1839, m. Olive Wing.

William S. Keyes perh. b. 7 July 1798, Plymouth (IGI), son of Benjamin & Polly (Norris).

Timothy Russell perhaps either the son of John & Hepzibah, b. 1793 in Nantucket, or more likely the son of Joseph & Edith (Allen), b. 24 Oct 1793 Dartmouth (IGI). The latter is in the 1850 census for Dartmouth, farmer. He sailed with Briggs again on a later trip prob. as second mate, same height and weight, called Timothy, 2nd, but prob. to distinguish him from an older Timothy in town. Timothy married Elizabeth Jenney, daughter of Joseph (NBM), in 1827 by Rev. Charles Morgridge. Luther Briggs was a member of his church by 1837. There was a Capt. Joseph Jenney who died in Fairhaven in 1813, age 31. Was he Joseph Lawrence Jenne, son of Caleb and Mary (Eure)? If so, he was one of John Briggs' in-laws. He prob. m. Abigail Church, NB, 1808.

Elkanah Hamblen perh. b. 12 Feb 1798, Rochester (IGI), son of Reuben & Phebe (Parlow), m. Emma Louise Gifford 1 Feb 1823, d. 10 Nov 1880, Wareham. 1850 census, Wareham, blacksmith. Elkanah's brother Reuben married a daughter of Wealthy (Jenney) Hamblen, who was Elizabeth (Jenney) Briggs' aunt.

Ichabod Bartlett perh. son of Peabody & Lucy (Turner)(IGI).

Gilman White, Jr. b. 10 Jan 1798, Newburyport (IGI), son of Gilman & Elizabeth (Brown).

Thomas Doten Harlow b. 24 Jan 1799, Plymouth, MA (IGI), son of Ephraim & Jerusha (Doten).

Edward Manchester was likely the stevedore listed in the 1850 census of New Bedford. He was 50, b. RI, wife Hannah. They are also in the 1860 census, same place and information. MA State Health Dept. deaths (147:121): d. 11 Nov. 1861, NB, stevedore, married, typhoid fever, b. Tiverton, son of Perry & Anna; also (355:135) Hannah Manchester, d. 26 Apr. 1884, NB, asthma & old age, 148 Kempton, age 77, b. Tiverton, dau of Benjamin & Hannah, both b. Tiverton.
Martin Bent, his death notice appears in the 11 April 1823 issue of the New Bedford Mercury, p. 3: "At Sea, on board ship Columbus, of Nantucket, on the 5th of Dec. last. Mr. Martin Bent of Wareham. He belonged to the ship Wilmington & Liverpool Packet, was taken sick and put on board the Columbus for the purpose of returning home."
Matthew Howard was a nephew of John Briggs, b. 12 Mar 1805, New Bedford (now Fairhaven, Fairhaven vrs), son of William and Diadama (Briggs) Howard. William Howard was the second cousin of John's wife Elizabeth Jenney. Matthew m. Deborah Hamblen Jenney, 22 Feb 1827, Fairhaven (vrs). Deborah was the niece of Elizabeth Jenney, daughter of Abisha and Phebe (Jenney) Jenney.
