Barbara was the daughter of James and Magaret (Allan) Brotchie. Based on the names of James and Margaret's children, James was likely the son of James and Margaret (Shearer), baptized in Dunnet on 23 January 1763. Margaret was the daughter of John, a weaver, and Barbara (Calder) Allan, baptized in Dunnet on 9 April 1776. Her baptismal record calls her mother a Wallace, but her death record and the baptisms of two children born to John and Barbara (Calder) in Dunnet indicate "Wallace" was a clerical error. Margaret died of old age in West Dunnet, probably in the home of her daughter Barbara Dunnet, on 14 March 1862. The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses say she was a widow living with the Dunnets, and James Dunnet signed the civil registration of her death.(1)

Jacobina, bap. 15 October 1837

vital records sources: Jacobina's birth comes from parish registers of Dunnet, when she was baptized on 26 August 1808. Her marriage is recorded there as well. Civil registration records her death (036/00 0022).

1. The baptisms mentioned are from the parish registers of Dunnet. Magaret (Allan) Brotchie's death is in a civil registration record. Her father John's occupation is given there.
