Although John was baptized in Salem on 25 December 1636, he was probably born in 1635 in England and the baptism was delayed for some reason, and ended up happening after they got to Salem.

John was a captain in the local militia. He was chosen to be a constable for the Bass River neighborhood of Salem on 24 June 1690 but probably refused and replaced on 3 July.1 At the 25 December 1690 Salem town meeting his was chosen a juryman. The Quarterly Court records show that he served at the 30 June 1691 session, listed as "Capt Jno Dodge" on the "jury of trials."2 In March 1701/2, John and three others were charged with signing a notice for commons proprietors to meet on the commons on 24 February. They were found guilty and appealed to the Court of Assizes, and in May, they were exonerated. It isn't said in the court minutes why they called the meeting, but they clearly did so without any sanction from the selectmen or at a town meeting.
