Elizabeth was born and raised in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her father died when she was about 18. She married and settled in Framingham with her husband Simon Mellen. She sent a letter to the probate court in Cambridge saying that she could administer Simon's estate, but she couldn't come in person to sign the required bond. Although her name appears to be a signature at the end of the letter, it was surely a copy and not in her hand. Not only is the handwriting strong at a time when she says she was sickly, she made a mark on deeds.
