All that is known about the family that John Fiske of Watertown came from is from a manuscript family history compiled in the 17th century by his cousin Martin Candler and an article by G. Andrews Moriarity that includes it and supplements it with wills.1 Candler says John was the son of Nathaniel and Dorothy (Symonds) and the grandson of Nathaniel Fiske and Abria Hovel, widow of a Mr. Lemen, of Weybread, Suffolk, England. No English records have yet been found to corroborate any of this. The time frame is unlikely, though. Moriarity had a hard time deciphering Candlers manuscript, which was in pedigree chart form, and not always clear about actual lineage. It's more likely that John was the son of Nathaniel and Abria. Nathaniel and Dorothy may have had a son named John, but he wouldn't have been born as early as 1621, which is about as early as John of Watertown could have been born. It's also possible that only one Nathaniel is involved here, marrying first to Dorothy Symonds and then to Abria Hovel. It was far more common for widows and widowers to marry than otherwise, especially men marrying widows after already being married.
The book Fiske and Fisk family used the Candler manuscript for the English information but has numerous mistakes and isn't reliable.2 His book came before the NEGHS article by Moriarity. It may be that Pierce's intrepretation of the Candler manuscript was poor, since at least some of his mistakes have been proven to be so. Pierce says the wife of Nathaniel was Alice (Henel) Leman. This was likely another misinterpretation. The name Abria, a form of Aubrey, wasn't uncommon, and the claim that she had a daughter Abria who married Francis Wretts is born out in his estate administration, for which "Abrae" was executor. Both Hovel and Henel have phonetic representations in the parish registers in Northern Suffolk and across the border in Norfolk, although Hovell appears more obviously. Pierce also says "there is a tradition in the family that he [Nathaniel] died on the passage to New England" with no other details or source.
