Josiah and others in his family who were literate spelled their last name "Wheler."

9 April 1710, Josiah Wheler and his wife were admitted to the Lancaster church from Concord. They lived on a farm on what is now South Bolton Road in a part of Lancaster incorporated as the town of Bolton in 1738.
