When Ruth's husband William died while on a sea voyage, she appears not to have been able to cope with it and left Massachusetts Bay. She had also lost two children shortly before, but she still had two sons living, age about 7 and 5. Her father became guardian to them, certainly in regard to land they inherited from their father's estate, but undoubtedly he and their grandmother Mary took them into their household and brought them up. Ruth ended up in Hampton, Province of New Hampshire, where she married Hampton native Samuel Smith.
