Given under my hand and seal of office, at Talcahuano, this 8th day of April 1847 [signed]
William Crosby, U. S. Consul Edward S. Upham, 1850 US census, Nantucket, living with John and Elizabeth Upham. They were surely his parents. John was a mariner, and two other young male Uphams in the household were seamen. All presumed sons were born in France. Charles Douglass was probably the same man who sailed out of New Bedford on Nye as a cook on 30 Sep 1844, and must have left the crew, perhaps at Talcahuano. He was perhaps an ordinary on Cherokee which sailed in July 1849. |
