Lydia was born in the Second Parish of Scituate, Province of Massachusetts Bay. Her father is said to have operated mills on Third Herring Brook, which now divides the towns of Hanover (incorporated in 1727) and Norwell (incorporated first as South Scituate in 1849). She was married at the Second Church (now the First Church in Norwell) by Rev. Nathaniel Eels. She moved with her husband and four children probably not far into the neighboring town of Hanover about 1729 and then the entire family moved to Lancaster, Province of Massachusetts Bay, in 1738.
