William Richard Cutter, in his Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts,1 says that Jonathan died in August 1737, and this date is now widely accepted. There's no document giving his death date, nor any reason by Cutter for giving it. He was certainly dead by 2 March 1738, when Jonathan, Jr.'s, portion of his father's estate was given to "the representatives of Jonathan Glover decd" (deceased).2 "Jackets and breeches" were made for his brothers in February 1736 for mourning, suggesting Jonathan, Jr., was already dead. The August 1737 date may have been an assumption based on the fact that his widow Tabitha was given guardianship of his sons on 11 September 1737.3 The main reasons guardianships were granted at that time was to protect the interests of a minor in inherited real estate. Jonathan, Jr., didn't have an estate to probate, at least nothing recorded, but his heirs were given a share of Jonathan, Sr.'s, real property. This would explain why the guardianships happened that late, although it would have been in anticipation of the division, which didn't happen until the following March.
